An American friend advised a small correction to yesterday’s blog. Elon Musk actually spent some $450 million on the midterms including over $200 million alone to support the defeated candidate Ken Paxton in Texas. Mind boggling. There is no room for this sort of money in US politics and reform of election finance should be a key priority for the Democrats.
However, reassuringly, whilst money may buy a small advantage in closely fought races, when the trend is strongly against you, it seems to make little difference. Good.
The size of the Democratic victory in the midterms continues to grow and the reshaping of American politics will remain exciting!
